Animal Welfare organisation

Animal welfare organisations are non-governmental organisations that seek to improve standards of animal welfare. Among other things, they make legal challenges, raise public awareness, and undertake political lobbying.

UFAW is one example of an international organisation for animal welfare. It was founded in 1926 as the University of London Animal Welfare Society (ULAWS) by Major Charles Hume, based on his belief that 'animal problems must be tackled on a scientific basis, with a maximum of sympathy but a minimum of sentimentality'.
